State collected 68.3 million in taxes

Portuguese bet almost 600 thousand euros per hour on online gaming

In a year affected by the pandemic, confined at home, the Portuguese bet an average of 598 thousand euros per hour, increasing to around 4 billion euros in games until September, an increase of 63.1% compared to the first nine months of the year past, according to data recently released the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ). State collected over 68 million euros in taxes.

Up to September, 3,937.3 million euros were invested in online games, with the largest contribution from games of chance, which accumulated 3.47 billion euros in bets, which corresponds to an increase of 68.9%, benefiting the temporary closure of casinos and gambling halls.

The Portuguese played 462.7 million euros in sports betting games, a 29.4% increase, despite the area being affected by the suspension of sports competitions due to the pandemic.

Operators saw gross revenue - value without the prizes awarded to bettors - rise 48.7%, to 223.1 million, with the largest share coming from games of chance: revenues of 125.4 million by September, a figure that already exceeds the 108.3 million obtained in 2019.

In sports betting, operators obtained 97.8 million euros of gross revenue, an increase of 32.7% over the first nine months of last year.

The State collected 68.3 million euros in taxes, an increase of 19.2%, compared to September last year in the amount collected in special tax on online gambling (IEJO).
