New Year’s Eve sees Macau welcome highest daily visitor tally in 11 months

According to figures released by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the city welcomed its highest daily total of visitor arrivals since January on New Year’s Eve. Local authorities reported that there were 30,747 visitor arrivals on 31 December 2020, eclipsing the 28,247 arrivals on 20 November during the Macao Grand Prix and 27,755 on Christmas Day.

The four day average from 31 December 2020 to 3 January 2021 was 21,242 of which 19,629 were from mainland China and 1,368 from Hong Kong.

Visitor numbers had previously plummeted from 2.85 million or around 92,000 per day in January 2020 to just 156,394 or around 5,585 per day in February due to COVID-19.

Visitation reached a low of just 16,133 or 520 people per day in May but has steadily improved since China resumed the Individual Visit Scheme from August.

The MGTO also revealed hotel occupancy rates of close to 70% during the New Year’s period, including 73% for 3-star hotels between 31 December and 3 January.

Macau’s hotels reported a combined occupancy rate of 67.2%, 15.1% higher than the full December average and 23.2% higher than November – with 5-star hotels at 67.6% and 4-star hotels at 69.9%.

The average room rate of MOP$1,127.60 (US$141) was also 21.7% higher than December as a whole.
