Caixa starts sale of Mega da Virada, prize may reach US$65m

Mega da Virada, the biggest lottery modality in Brazil, starts receiving bets from today (16) for the prize estimated at R$350 million (US$65m), according to Caixa Econômica Federal. The draw will take place on December 31 and the games can be played at lotteries across the country, through Loterias Caixa app or online. The value of the 6-number single bet is R$4.50 (US$0.85). In this first sales phase, Caixa sells tickets for the special competition in parallel with the regular ones.

Bets for the Mega da Virada, contest 2440 by Mega-Sena, begin to be sold this Tuesday (16). As it is a special contest, the prize does not accumulate. If there is no hit for the six tens, the the prize will be distributed among those who hit the 2nd lane, of five tens.

Sales will take place in parallel with the normal Mega-Sena extractions until the end of December until they are stopped for the exclusive sale of Mega da Virada. From each normal draw in the lottery, 5% will accumulate for the special draw, which is drawn on the night of December 31st.

After taxes are deducted, Mega da Virada's award is as follows:

- 62% of the prize goes to whoever got all six numbers right;

- 19% for those who got five numbers right;

- 19% for those who got four numbers right.

The player can increase the chances of winning by purchasing the jackpots that are sold at lotteries. At Mega-Sena, the bolões have a minimum price of R$10 (US$1.85). However, each quota cannot be less than R$5 (US$.925). It is possible to make a pool with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 100 quotas.

The last Mega da Virada contest was held on December 31, 2020 and had a total prize of R$325.2 million (US$59.5m). An online bet and another from Aracaju/SE hit the result: 17-20-22-35-41-42.
