SECAP reports that nominal collection of lotteries In Brazil recorded 8.3% growth in 2021

The Ministry of Economy's Secretariat for Evaluation, Planning, Energy and Lottery (Secap) has just released the 2nd edition of the bulletin “Panorama of the Brazilian Lottery Market”. The publication indicates a steady growth in lottery collections in the country from 2017 to 2020, in addition to projecting growth expectations for the closed year of 2021, whose forecast is that the collection will exceed R$ 18 billion (US$ 3.23bln).

When making the comparison between the nominal collection for the period January -September 2021, there was a growth of 8.3% compared to the same period in 2020 and 28.6% compared to 2017. For the Undersecretary of Awards and Drawings of the ME, Waldir Marques, the numbers indicate the solidity of the national lottery market, despite the difficulties faced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the bulletin, the main lottery products in Brazil today are: Lotofácil (36.7%), Mega-Sena (30.7%) and Quina (19.9%), with Lotofácil surpassing Mega-Sena as the most sold one in Brazil. The publication attributes the change to the fact that Lotofácil became daily as of August 2020 and the little accumulation of regular Mega-Sena contests in recent months.

The study indicates that the relative share of the lottery market in Brazil remains largely centered on three large lottery products: Lotofácil, Mega-Sena and Quina, which account for 87% of sales.

The publication also points to a 14% increase in transfers for financing public policies obtained from lotteries, in the period from January to September 2021, which exceeded R$ 4.64 billion (US$ 830m). In this period, the main social transfers were those destined to social security (46.8%), to the National Public Security Fund (FNSP), with 25.2% and to education, with 10.6%. Education also recorded a 110% increase in resources due to the reversal of one of the 2020 Mega da Virada awards that had not been redeemed.

In addition to the specific destinations, the study shows that there was an income tax payment of approximately R$ 1.09 billion (US$ 195m), which could be used to cover any government expense. Thus, in the period between January and September 2021 alone, the sector allocated R$ 5.7 billion (US$ 1.02bln) to the National Treasury (social transfers + I.R.).
