Uruguay begins international process for new 5-star casino-resort in Rocha

The Uruguayan Ministry of Tourism, Germán Cardoso, opened a call to all those interested in building a five-star hotel 'with international quality', which will also have a license to operate a private casino in Rocha. The new development will be located between the towns of La Paloma and El Chuy, near the border with Brazil. 'The objective is to turn Rocha into a destination that has all the possibilities,' said Cardoso.

"Starting today there will be a 90-day period in which the different commercial, business, economic and interest groups may be presenting themselves to the Ministry of Tourism with the different projects to be carried out in this vast area of kilometers, which It will be the object of study by a technical team that we have put to work here," said Minister Cardoso.

The announcement was made during a press conference in which participated Minister Germán Cardoso and the mayor of the department, Alejo Umpiérrez. "Sometimes crises are opportunities", considered the communal chief.

Although local authorities stressed that investors have been looking for "several months", the call of international interest was officially opened this week and companies that want to participate in the process will have 90 days to present their proposals.

According to the Uruguayan Government, it is the "most important tourist project in the department", that will be located between La Paloma and El Chuy, close to the border with Brazil. "The objective is to turn Rocha into a destination that has all the possibilities," said Cardoso.

The minister assured that this is a project that "Rocha has been waiting for many years," and that due to various circumstances "it has been delayed and was not been possible to carry out."

The call will summon local and international companies that are interested in investing in the casino resort, but in a second instance the call will be made for the official tender, in which the companies of the first stage may or may not participate.

"Based on the number of projects that are presented, obviously we are going to choose the best, but it is not the same to choose a complex that has 80 rooms than 150," the minister explained.

For his part, mayor of Rocha Alejo Umpiérrez added that the project seeks to “promote a tourist destination that, although it has it in terms of its economic revenue, lacks a high-income segment with good contributory capacity. Rocha is not trying to imitate any other tourist destination, but to sell its product, the Rocha product with all its profile and identity, but at a high-class level. "
