Revenue from sports betting sites reaches US$ 1.25 billion per year in Brazil alone

Leandro Mazzini, a journalist with a postgraduate degree in Political Science from UnB and a writer, states in his renowned column in the Esplanada newspaper that there are now around 500 sports betting sites operating in Brazil, the vast majority of which are hosted on internet servers abroad. Foreigners that operate in Brazil hold 70% of the local market, without paying taxes and raising hundreds of millions of reais per month. 'Revenues reach R$ 7 billion (US$ 1.25b) per year in Brazil alone, confirm operators,' assures Mazzini.

The multinationals earn so much that two of them, from Great Britain, pay R$ 400 million (US$ 71m) per year in marketing and media in Brazil. One of the contracts for a cable TV channel is R$ 88 million (US$ 15.6m). Another, for an open TV channel, reaches R$ 58 million (US$ 10.33m).

Online sports betting has already been approved by law by the National Congress, but regulation is missing. Brazilians who try to undertake end up losing.

Foreigners that operate in Brazil hold 70% of the market here. If online gambling is regulated, the entry of Brazilians into the business can generate up to 450 thousand jobs.

The case is on the tables of the Secretariat for Evaluation, Planning, Energy and Lottery of the Ministry of Economy. Brazilians are waiting for regulations to learn how and how much to invest. For now, the market is mostly occupied by foreigners.

Contacts of this column inform that only one Brazilian company wants 2,000 betting shops immediately if it is authorized to operate online betting on the streets.
