Proposal destines unredeemed lottery prize in Brazil for public health

The Bill 1137/21 of deputy Aureo Ribeiro (Solidariedade-RJ) determines that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the values of the federal lottery prizes not redeemed by the winners are transferred in full to the National Health Fund (FNS). The funds should be invested exclusively in actions to fight the coronavirus, preferably in the purchase of vaccines. Currently, that money goes to education.

The proposal, pending in the Chamber of Deputies, deals with the lotteries mentioned in Law 11.345 / 06, such as Mega-Sena, Timemania, Loteca and Federal.

Currently, this standard allocates money to the Student Financing Fund (Fies).

According to the author, deputy Aureo Ribeiro (Solidariedade-RJ), the prizes not withdrawn totaled R$312 million (US$55m) in 2020.

"The resources will be able to help in the hiring of professionals and in the purchase of medicines and vaccines," says Ribeiro.
