“The Health Lottery does not generate new public expenses, will increase collection in Brazil”

The creation of the so-called Loteria da Saúde (Health Lottery), which aims to allocate the funds raised to Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS), is in the final stages of discussion and voting. The author of the proposal, Deputy Capitão Wagner (Pros-CE), points out that the new betting modality will not generate new expenses for the State, but a greater collection.

The deputy adds that other suggestions under debate in the Chamber provide for the allocation of part of the resources of other lotteries, but there would be losses for other sectors, especially education, sports and public safety and, even recognizing the essential moment to prioritize health, the parliamentarian notes that it is more appropriate to look for a new source.

For the project of Capitão Wagner, the Ministry of Economy and Caixa Econômica Federal, institution responsible for the management of lotteries in Brazil, will define the rules of the new modality, especially on the periodicity of the games and on their characteristics.

The deputy believes that the matter will be analyzed with priority in the two Chambers of Parliament, guaranteeing more resources to face the coronavirus pandemic and, subsequently, for the Brazilian public health system.
