New proposal aims to regulate sports betting and online gambling in Mexico

An initiative of the deputy Erik Morales Elvira proposes to reform the Federal Law of Gaming and Draws to regulate games with bets and prizes, as well as the celebration of draws carried out physically or virtually. In this way, the modifications would allow incorporating sports betting and online gambling in the country.

It is an initiative of the deputy of Morena Erik Morales Elvira, which establishes to empower the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) to authorize and regulate the bets that are made in any event carried out in national or international territory.

The proposed law includes sporting events where quantifiable money prizes are awarded.

According to estimates from the Association of Permittees, Operators and Suppliers of the Entertainment and Gambling Industry in Mexico (AIEJA), sports betting has become a growing industry in the country, and currently generates US$ 422 million annually. The expectation is that the sector may grow 25% to 30% per year in the next six years.

The initiative states that, due to the uncertainty caused by obsolete legislation on gaming and draws, very few internet casinos have an official license granted by the authorities in Mexico.

"An important number of international casinos set up on digital platforms do have the permits to operate and obtain profits. Therefore, the gaming industry in Mexico is lagging behind and this means that its impact cannot be seen reflected in our country," establishes the proposal that was sent to the Governance and Population Commission.
