Sports app with 20 million monthly active users

SofaScore chooses Brazil to grow in LatAm and closes deal with betting sites

Founded 13 years ago in Croatia, SofaScore is a sports app that provides live scores and sports stats to its 20 million monthly active users, 2 of them came from Brazil, their biggest market. This encouraged brand to launch their first brand campaign Seu Sofá Seu Estádio and a partnership with Brasileirão. Big traffic turned SofaScore into one of the most attractive platforms for sports advertisers, such as betting sites as Bet365 and 1xBet. Equally logical is company’s decision to choose Brazil for their second office.

Sofascore’s live scoreboard covers over 500 leagues, cups and tournaments around the world and is updated with results, statistics, tables, calendars and live streaming and odds. Videos with the best bids for the most popular leagues such as Spain’s LaLiga, Liga BBVA and Copa do Rey, Serie Italiana and Italian Cup, Germany’s Bundesliga and DFB, Ligue 1 in France and UEFA Champions Cup, European League and international tournaments such as World Cup and European Championship.

The company was founded 13 years ago in Zagreb, the capital of the small country of Croatia, and it has now grown into one of the most used live score products in the world, with 20 million monthly active users. Being a European-based company, in its beginnings, top countries in the number of SofaScore users were the biggest European countries, with Italy at number one. However, in the last couple of years Brazil took over and is now, with an average of almost 2 million monthly active users, their biggest market.

Sofascore is another application that can be used by bettors. The site offers chances for the results to occur, which serve as a prognosis and help bettors to make their guesses. Therefore, the integration of all its statistics is one of the services most required by the houses of the sector such as Bet365, as well as the possibility of having a presence on the Sofascore site itself with banners that attract part of the huge traffic of the site has.

Obviously, Brazilians’ love for football translates into their love for everything football-related, including the deep stats and live features SofaScore offers. A contributing factor to the brand’s popularity there, is for sure their strong presence on social media. Their Brazilian Twitter account reached 200k followers in a matter of just two years and is widely used as a benchmark for assessing players’ and clubs’ performances. Live tweets during a match reaching up to 5k likes prove that Brazilians crave for deeper stats that show much more than scores.

However, it is not only fans that follow SofaScore; sports professionals and players too are known to check the most famous SofaScore feature – SofaScore statistical ratings. “We keep in contact with some professionals and sports analysts and we know that many of them, at the end of the match, open the app to check their performance and stats for the team as well”, SofaScore COO Ivan Bešlić comments.

The hunger for smarter football coverage led to a big SofaScore awareness surge in Brazil. This encouraged SofaScore to launch their first brand campaign "Seu Sofá Seu Estádio" exactly in Brazil, but also to form strong partnerships, one of the most significant ones is with the Brazilian first league, Brasileirão itself.

It is no wonder that all of this turned SofaScore into one of the most attractive platforms for advertisers too, especially those in industries related to football, such as betting, who know that they will reach a massive and extremely engaged audience of football fans in SofaScore.

Equally logical is SofaScore’s decision to choose Brazil for their second office. And although Brazil will stay in their focus, their target is the entire South American market; for example, they recently hired an experienced Sales Representative, Rocio Moitiño, from Uruguay.

Brazil is the great Latin American market, and we are happy to close agreements with local bookmakers that want to show themselves on our site. They seek to take advantage of the strong penetration we have in this market where today we register almost 2 million monthly active users. We are also going to close integration agreements with several operators in their systems”, reveals Moitiño.

The founders, Ivan Bešlić and Zlatko Hrkać, are serious about their Latin American connection: "We have a very strong local presence with our team and we intend to expand with an office in Brazil, which will lead activities in Latin America".

No matter how random it seems, the connection between Brazil and Croatia lies on the strong passion for football; Croatia’s impressive run at the last World Cup won the hearts of everyone and there is really no need to describe Brazil’s love for the beautiful game. With this in mind, it seems that SofaScore activities in Brazil are only the beginning of much bigger things to come.

Its secret sauce to being the best-rated app among the competition, both on the App Store (4.9), and on Google Play (4.8), are its constant efforts to turn raw data into valuable insights, that help users immediately figure out what’s going on in the match. That is, SofaScore is known to offer not only detailed stats for every single match, player, and team, but also for its visualization of statistics in the form of insightful graphics.

Attack Momentum, Heatmap and Attribute Overview are all visual features that have become instantly recognizable on social media and are used by some of the biggest media outlets such as Daily Mail, ESPN, or Mundo Deportivo. Extremely fast push notifications also contribute to the fans’ approval, as well as the quality of SofaScore’s data providers, which have been premium from the very beginning.
