The rise of sports betting on women's competitions in Brazil

In the wake of the growth in women's football consumption, data from Casa de Apostas platform show that the number of bets on this type of competition increased by 139% in 2022 compared to 2021, more than 95% of them related to this year's Brazilian Women's Championship. According to the company, this rise is due to the increase in the number of competitions, audience and sponsorships, but also the dissemination and publicity of betting companies.

“The industry has grown as a whole, the visibility around sports broadcasts and social networks is massive and, of course, betting around these competitions has also gained prominence,” says Hans Schleier, marketing director at the company.

As for the company Esportes da Sorte, bets aimed at women's disputes grew three times this year when compared to 2021. “All the publicity made by the media is reflected in this return, in addition to the semi-finals of this year's Brazilian Championship that took four clubs with huge fans, cases of Flamengo against Internacional and Corinthians against Palmeiras. This consequently contributed to these accesses,” says Daniel Trajano, commercial director.

Regulation of bookmakers

Although legal in Brazil since 2018, bookmakers are not regulated and, therefore, are registered outside the country. The sector's expectation was that they would be regulated in 2022, but the plans were hampered by the elections as the topic of gambling displeases the religious wing of candidate Jair Bolsonaro.

“There is an understanding that shortly after the elections the federal government would finally regulate the sports betting industry. Now, with the rise of a large group of Conservative lawmakers, greater doubt is starting to loom on the horizon. If the Bolsonaro government does not regulate it by the end of this year, in 2023 the issue could face additional difficulties,” says Eduardo Carlezzo, a lawyer who works with the sector.

Carlezzo understands that the victory of candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the presidency may be an additional obstacle to the approval of the law. “There is no sign of what would happen to the sector during an eventual Lula government, however it is known that the PT does not have much affection for the privatization of public services and companies, which in theory could be a new obstacle for the regularization of the sector in case it is not done by the end of this year,” he says.

Even so, the discussion of the regulation and the approval of the text of Bill 442/91, known as the Regulatory Framework for Gaming in Brazil, by the Chamber of Deputies, contribute to the business in the country, which has been growing and already sponsors a large part of the clubs of football.

Another segment that stands out is betting on politics. Between the Friday and Sunday of the election, the company Esportes da Sorte registered more than 60 thousand unit bets in the presidential election.
