PRESIDENT DIDN'T SET TERM

Decree to regulate sports betting sites is “quite advanced”, says Bolsonaro

President and reelection candidate Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Friday (14) that the text of the decree that will regulate the operation of sports betting houses in Brazil is “mature” and “quite advanced”. The operation, which has grown rapidly, has been allowed in the country since 2018, but companies must be headquartered outside Brazil. Consequently, the government does not collect from the transactions.

Bolsonaro did not set a deadline for the regulation of the activity and did not give details about the rules he should impose. The main pending issue today, according to the president, is to define the destination of the funds raised.

In an interview with the podcast "Paparazzo Rubro-Negro", the betting model was called ".bet", in reference to the domain of sites that operate the activity.

"The '.bet' is quite advanced with a decree to regulate it," said Bolsonaro. "The guy keeps playing and the money goes out, so it's mature with the whole society."

Asked about the destination of the collection, the president amended: "I don't want it for the Treasury, I have too much money. The arm wrestling right now is where this money goes. It goes to treat drug addicts, goes to security, goes to infrastructure. We're getting it right there. A part goes to third, second, first division [of the football championship]. I think that Seria A might be left out."

The president considers sports betting a separate case in the regulation of so-called gambling. Bolsonaro does not agree, for example, with the release of slot machines, and has already warned Congress that he will veto any project with this objective. Parliamentarians are also discussing the eventual release of bingos and casinos.

“In Brazil, if you allow the issue of gambling, there will be a problem. Slot machines, in my opinion, cannot. The guy goes to the bakery to buy bread and comes back empty-handed because he played the slot machine there. So, there are games and gambling. I believe that Brazil is not yet mature enough to discuss this. Congress is discussing a project. As it is, I veto it," he concluded.
