Money goes to student finance

More than US$ 60m were not claimed in Brazilian lotteries in 2022

Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF) lotteries failed to distribute R$ 323.34 million (US$ 61.35m) in prizes this year because players did not show up to redeem the amounts. This total refers to bets that were not cashed out in the period between January and October 2022. The “ignored” money includes all types of lottery games in Brazil.

From January to October 2022, a total of R$ 323.34 million (US$ 61.35m) in prizes were no redeemed by bettors of all lottery modalities in Brazil.

By the rules, the redemption of prizes must take place within 90 days after extraction.

The prescribed amount of the awarded bets is passed on in full to student financing (Fies), as provided for in Law 13.756/18.

Caixa Econômica Federal reported that lotteries "are an important instrument to promote the social development of Brazil, as it directs almost half of its revenue to social programs and projects in areas such as sport, culture, social security, health, safety, among others."
