Santa Catarina gives up on relaunching state lottery after lobbyists pressure

Planned for 2022, the resumption of the state lottery of Santa Catarina, in Brazil, is suspended. Since last year, the current management of the Department of Finance provides for the project so that it could finance the SC Housing program, which builds houses in municipalities with low HDI in the state. However, the government decided to back off the proposal after coming under pressure from lobbyists.

As determined by this columnist Ânderson Silva of the local newspaper NSC, companies from various locations would have sought the Secretary of Finance to exert pressure.

The show "Bom Dia Santa Catarina" presented a report stating that companies from different places would have sought out the Secretary of Finance to put pressure on them. Watch the video here (in Portuguese).

There was even demand from companies in the United States, such as operators of online betting sites. Given this scenario, the decision was to retreat.

In early 2022, Governor Carlos Moisés sanctioned the law establishing the Social Promotion and Poverty Eradication Fund (Social Fund) and providing, as a source of funding, for the re-creation of Santa Catarina’s State Lottery.

The government had 60 days to regulate the proposal and would launch the bid for interested companies, which did not happen.
