Historic year in Nevada as casinos enjoy record US$13.4bn in 2021

After a long, very difficult period for the gaming industry around the world, seriously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic that forced the cancellation of face-to-face activities for months, Nevada’s casinos enjoyed their best ever year in 2021 with US$13.4bn being earned. December brought in more than US$1bn in winnings for the 10th consecutive month. GGR boomed last year across all parts of Nevada, with 11 out of 18 local markets achieving revenue records in 2021.

The annual increase came in at 70.6 per cent with slots up 70.5 per cent in 2021, accounting for 68.8 per cent of the total. Table gaming increase by 70.7 per cent compared to last year.

Roulette its best enjoyed its best ever year with a total win of US$428m whilst sports betting generated win of US$445.1m, also setting a record.

This threshold had never been reached,” said Michael Lawton, a senior research analyst for the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

He revealed that GGR boomed last year across all parts of Nevada, with 11 out of 18 local markets achieving revenue records in 2021.

The reasons for the record level of gaming win recorded this calendar year began with the successful rollout of vaccines, which eliminated capacity restrictions on the gaming floor. This demand was being driven by healthy consumer savings as the result of stimulus payments and the sustained rebound of leisure travel. Additionally, the return of special events and entertainment continued to boost gaming win to record levels,” Lawton explained.

Clark County generated the biggest slice of GGR at US$998m, up 79 per cent on last year. More specifically, casinos along the Las Vegas Strip had the best surge in performance with a gaming win of US$680m, up 122 per cent from December last year.
