The president spoke after Chamber’s approval

Bolsonaro reaffirms that he will veto project that legalizes gaming in Brazil

President Jair Bolsonaro said this Thursday (24) that he will veto the Bill that legalizes gambling in Brazil, such as casinos, bingos, jogo do bicho and other electronic bets. The text was approved by the Chamber and will now be analyzed by the Federal Senate. 'What I've already decided here, the entire House knows, the presidents of the House and the Senate also know: once approved, we will exercise our right of veto', said Bolsonaro, during his weekly live on social media.

A day after the Chamber of Deputies approved the basic text of a bill that legalizes the gaming verticals such as bingo, casino and jogo do bicho, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said again, this Thursday (24), he will veto the proposal if the Federal Senate approves it.

“The House and Senate, everyone knows, have autonomy. Some want me to disapprove or approve certain things there. I have my limit. I did what I could with some parliamentarians closest to us to see if I could defeat the project there. Unfortunately, it was approved,” said the president during a live broadcast on social media.

“Once approved, we will exercise our right of veto. […] I find it difficult to override the veto,” he continued. The deputies approved, at dawn this Thursday, by 246 votes to 202, the basic text and rejected, in a session during Thrusday, all eight highlights, which intended to change the text. Now, the proposal goes to the senators for analysis.

The approval is a defeat for the evangelical bench, which articulated against the proposal and tried to obstruct the vote on the text that has been going through the House for more than 30 years.

If the bill is approved by the National Congress and later vetoed by the president, the veto can be maintained or overturned. According to the rules in force, the rejection of the veto occurs by manifestation of the absolute majority of votes of federal deputies and senators, that is, 257 votes of deputies and 41 votes of senators, computed separately. With a lower number of votes for rejection in one of the Houses, the veto is maintained.
