New support in Federal Chamber

Brazilian deputy Pedro Westphalen defends gambling to finance nursing wage floor

Federal deputy Pedro Westphalen (PP-RS) defended in this Monday (30) session the legalization of gambling in Brazil to face the payment of the new nursing wage floor. Rapporteur of the project in the Plenary of the Chamber, Westphalen said that it is necessary to find ways to reach a good term. “We have to look for funding sources for this and the legalization of the gaming sector is one of them.”

A bill that defines a new salary floor for health professionals is under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies and some parliamentarians have already spoken out in favor of legalizing the gaming sector to finance the new floor for the category.

In an interview with the Electronic Panel of Rádio Câmara, federal deputy Pedro Westphalen (PP-RS) talked again regarding the need to seek sources of funding for the category and stated that gaming legalization would provide the necessary support. “Santas Casas and philanthropic hospitals need resources and there is a need to create mechanisms for them to have permanent financial support to continue operating. One of the sources could come from gaming,” he defended.

According to the deputy, “even the evangelical bench understands the need for collection to meet the demand of nursing. The source of income [for this] has already been found, all it takes is political will to implement [the legalization of gaming].”

Westphalen's position adds to other defenses of the sector to fund the new nursing wage floor. The government leader himself, federal deputy Ricardo Barros (PP-PR), said earlier this month that the Executive is committed to seeking resources and that an option may come from gaming.

The author of the project, Carmen Zanotto (Citizenship-SC), defended that a source of funds would be the allocation of a portion of the collection with the regulation of gaming, which the deputy believes could increase from 4% to 12% in the project that is in the Senate.

In plenary, deputy Alice Portugal (PCdoB-BA) also reinforced that the approval of Bill 442/91 in the Senate can “guarantee the level of nursing”. She took advantage of a speech by Deputy Bacelar (PV-BA), who stated, at the time, that the bill, which was approved in the Chamber at the beginning of this year, would be voted on in the Senate to guarantee resources for states and municipalities.

On the occasion, the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), a defender of legalization, confirmed that he has received information that "the government will support gaming in the Senate.”
