Senate poll: Majority wants gaming legalization in Brazil

DataSenado carried out a survey about projects that it has on the exploitation of gambling in Brazil and 58% of the 806 participants were in favor of regulating the activity. 61% believe that it would increase Brazilian tax revenue and 57% see the increase in jobs as a consequence.

The result of the poll carried out by DataSenado was released on the afternoon of this Monday (9). A total of 806 people participated in the poll, which was on the air of DataSenado from March 7 to May 2.

The report shows that 58% of the participants approve the legalization of gambling in Brazil. Project in this sense has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies and is in the Senate Presidency for deliberation on the rite of processing in the House.

The survey by the DataSenado Research Institute was based on Bill 442/1991 – which revokes the legal provisions referring to the practice of the “jogo do bicho” –, which is in the Presidency of the House, and Bill 2.648/2019 – which provides for the operating casinos in resorts.

When asked if the exploration of gambling associated with resorts and leisure complexes would be positive for the growth of tourism in Brazil, 58% of the participants answered YES and 40% NO.

In the opinion of internet users, the exploitation of games of chance would also have a positive effect on tax collection in Brazil. The vast majority (61%) believe that it would increase Brazilian tax revenue.

In addition to this positive effect, participants also expect that exploitation of gambling by resorts will result in increased employment. In total, 57% believe in this possibility.

Despite believing in the increase in the level of jobs, a small portion of internet users fear the loss of wealth by Brazilian families due to addiction to gambling (25%).

The results reflect the opinion of those who participated in the poll on the website of the Federal Senate. The numbers do not represent the opinion of the entire Brazilian population. The percentage values have been rounded so that the sum of the percentages of some graphs may differ from 100%, up or down.

As the poll has no official character, the margin of error and the level of confidence were not taken into account.

In any case, the senators – and the President of the House himself, Rodrigo Pacheco – always take into account surveys and polls carried out by DataSenado. Especially because they draw an expectation of the population regarding relevant national issues.
