Chile renewed 10 casinos licenses for 15 years

The Resolution Council of the Superintendence of Gaming Casinos of Chile granted last Friday (5) 10 operating permits for casinos in eight regions of the country for a second period of 15 years. The companies that are allowed to continue operating are Latin Gaming Calama, Gran Casino de Copiapó, San Francisco Investment, Casino de Colchagua, Marina del Sol, Casino Gran Los Ángeles, Casino de Juegos Temuco, Casino de Juegos Valdivia, Latin Gaming Osorno and Casino de Juegos Punta Arenas.

Chile’s Superintendence of Gaming Casinos officially renewed the operating license of 10 casinos in a public hearing held last Friday (5) chaired by the Undersecretary of Finance, Claudia Sanhueza Riveros, in her capacity as president of the Resolution Council.

The entity is the "collegiate body that has the exclusive power to grant, deny, renew and revoke operating permits for gaming casinos in the country," as well as "gaming licenses and related services, in accordance with the provisions of the Casino Law, and on the basis of the proposal formulated by the SCJ.

Through a statement, the Chilean authorities confirmed that the licenses of the following operating companies were renewed for a second period of 15 years:

  • Latin Gaming Calama S.A. -  Marina del Sol Calama
  • Gran Casino de Copiapó S.A. - Casino Antay Copiapó
  • San Francisco Investment S.A. - Casino Monticello – Mostazal
  • Casino de Colchagua S.A. -  Santa Cruz
  • Marina del Sol S.A. – Talcahuano
  • Casino Gran Los Ángeles S.A. - Enjoy Los Ángeles
  • Casino de Juegos Temuco S.A. - Dreams Temuco
  • Casino de Juegos Valdivia S.A. - Dreams Valdivia
  • Latin Gaming Osorno S.A. - Marina del Sol Osorno
  • Casino de Juegos Punta Arenas S.A. - Dreams Punta Arenas

The companies must develop the authorized comprehensive project within the term established in the operation plan, which may not exceed two years from the publication of the resolution that grants the operation permit. Before the expiration of the aforementioned period, the company may request an extension, which can only be granted for well-founded reasons.

In the case of renovating companies, the execution plans of the projects evaluated seek to give continuity to the operation of the casinos, which is especially relevant considering the economic contributions they make to the municipalities and regional governments in which said casinos are located.

As a result of the application of the modifications to Law No. 19,995, of August 2015, the casinos that renew or are awarded the operating permit must annually pay the municipalities an economic offer, the which corresponds to an additional contribution to the one they deliver as a specific tax for their gross income and the visits they receive.

In turn, and as a consequence of the withdrawal of its application by the company Operación El Escorial S.A., current operator of an operating permit in the commune of Antofagasta, and which expires on November 11, 2023, the Superintendence must initiate a new application process to grant one (1) national quota.

In addition, the entity indicated that it decided to suspend the opening of the economic offer of the application corresponding to the commune of Talca until is resolved the reversal appeal presented by the applicant company Marina del Sol Talca S.A. against a resolution of July 25, 2022, "which put an end to the technical evaluation of his application."

The regulatory entity had referred that the decision on the case of Marina del Sol Talca S.A. occurred “because, from the information provided by the operating company, there is no certainty of effective and uninterrupted possession and use of the property presented, during the 15-year duration of the operating permit.
