SBC Barcelona to discuss whether Brazilian betting market can take advantage of World Cup

The closing day of SBC Barcelona 2022 has a space especially dedicated to Brazil. From 12:30 p.m. (7:30 a.m. Brasilia time) and moderated by Martin Lycka (Entain), the panel made up of Andreas Bardun (KTO Group), Neill Simpson (NOK Services), Roberto Regianini (FBMDS) and Fellipe Fraga (EstrelaBet) will discuss the advances in the regulation of the local betting market and the business during the World Cup in Qatar.

After the success of the first edition in 2021, the SBC Summit returns for another great event in the iGaming market. At this conference, some of the main objectives are to debate the future of the industry, exchange knowledge and strengthen the sector’s networking.

The exhibition will feature 7 stages and lectures by 350 senior executives and experts. Some of the topics highlighted for the debates will be: payment and compliance, responsible gaming, affiliate marketing, sports betting and online casino.

Without enough time to regulate the sports betting market ahead of the World Cup that will be held in Qatar this year, it is considered that the Brazilian government has already lost the opportunity to collect significant revenues generated by the activity.

Specialists estimate that the regulation will generate around R$ 3 billion a year (just over $588 million) for the State, in addition to R$ 2 billion (US$ 392m) from the sale of operating licenses. The World Cup alone will move more than R$ 20 billion (US$ 3.92b) in bets in the country.

These numbers led SBC to incorporate into its ‘Track: Global Gaming & Betting Markets’ agenda a panel exclusively dedicated to analyzing the current situation of the Brazilian market with four specialists. The event will be on the 22nd from 12:30 p.m. to 1:10 p.m. (7:30 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. Brasilia time).

As progress on liberalised gaming and sports betting market regulation inches forward step by step, will Brazil be ready to take full advantage of the Winter World Cup? The panel breaks down the licensing and regulation requirements for iGaming and sports betting in Brazil and discusses the pros and cons of the various market entry strategies for the region.

Although the tournament will be held between November and December of this year, the government of Jair Bolsonaro decided to postpone the decree to implement Law 13.756/18, which regulates the sports betting market in the country.

The delay of the measure is due to the electoral calendar, as the president fears losing the support of the evangelical bench if he endorses this gambling modality.
