Operation against match manipulation investigates Flamengo's match and 6 other games

The Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO) launched this Tuesday (28) the third phase of Operation Maximum Penalty, which investigates alleged fraud in football matches in Brazil. Games from Goiás and Flamengo, teams from Series A of the Brazilian Championship, are among those investigated. No one has been arrested so far.

Ten search and seizure warrants were executed in eight municipalities in Goiás and four other states. The operation is carried out through the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco) and the Institutional Security and Intelligence Coordination (CSI).

According to the MP, the national championship matches are in the second round and the state championship games took place in January and February. The investigation found that a criminal group offered cash rewards for players to receive punishments, such as a yellow card, red card, penalty or partial score in the match. In this way, members of the scheme profited from sports betting sites.

The following games are being investigated:

  • Avaí x Flamengo – Series A of the 2022 Brasileirão;
  • Náutico x Sampaio Corrêa – Series B of the 2022 Brasileirão;
  • Náutico x Criciúma - Series B of the 2022 Brasileirão;
  • Goiânia x Aparecidense - Goianão 2023;
  • Goiás x Goiânia - Goianão 2023;
  • Nacional x Auto Esporte - 2023 Paraibano Championship; It is
  • Sousa x Auto Esporte – 2023 Paraibano Championship.

Maximum Penalty

The third phase of the operation is a follow-up to phases I and II, launched in February and April of this year, which culminated in the installation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry in the Chamber of Deputies, which did not have a report approved and ended without any decision.

According to the MP-GO, to date, three complaints have been received by the Judiciary, with 32 people accused of crimes of being part of a criminal organization and corruption in sports.

Athletes punished by FIFA (penalties are worldwide, that is, athletes are prohibited from playing on any team):

  • Matheus Gomes (Eliminated);
  • Moraes (720 days);
  • Paulo Miranda (720 days);
  • Paulo Sérgio (600 days);
  • Matheusinho (600 days);
  • André Queixo (600 days);
  • Kevin Lomónaco (360 days);
  • Fernando Neto (360 days).
