Rodrigo Pacheco sends Bill to CCJ

Project that legalizes gambling in Brazil returns to Senate

Bill 442/91, which legalizes gambling in Brazil and which was numbered 2234/2022 in the Senate, has returned to action. The President of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco, dispatched the project to be appreciated by the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ). It will be up to the head of the CCJ, Davi Alcolumbre, to designate a rapporteur for the matter.

After more than a year in the Senate drawer, Bill 442/91 began to move again. Yesterday (9th), President Rodrigo Pacheco dispatched the project that received the number 2234/2022 in the House to be analyzed by the Constitution and Justice Commission.

The Bill legalizes all gambling in Brazil, such as casinos in resorts, tourist casinos, bingo, jogo do bicho and online gaming.

According to the project approved in the Chamber of Deputies on February 24 of last year and in accordance with the limitations imposed by the Bill, Brazil could have 43 casinos, 292 jogo do bicho points and more than six thousand bingo and video bingo rooms.

It will be up to the president of the CCJ, Davi Alcolumbre, to designate a senator to be the rapporteur for Bill 2234/2022. After the nomination, the senators will have five days to present amendments to the project.

Alcolumbre, during the period in which he presided over the Senate, committed to releasing the project for processing and approval shortly after the elections, but the strong opposition of the Bolsonaro government and his evangelical followers to the Bill he held back the decision.

Just last year, a survey conducted by DataSenado pointed out that 58% of voters were in favor of legalizing gambling in Brazil. More than 60% of those who responded to the survey believed that the measure could increase tax revenue and 57% saw an increase in jobs as a result.

The current president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, has taken the position several times that he would not be in a hurry with the procedure and that he would forward it to the House committees at the appropriate time.

The Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission, chaired by Alcolumbre, has 27 titular senators and another 27 substitutes.
