In the first meeting of the Sports Committee, the collegiate approved the request of Senator Romário (PL-RJ), who chairs the group, to discuss the manipulation of results in football. Its initiative was due to constant denunciations of the practice, which has been investigated by the Goiás Public Ministry and which culminated in the creation of a CPI in the Chamber of Deputies.
“The growing expansion of the sports betting market and the need to ensure transparency, legality and the fight against illicit practices leave no doubt about the importance of promoting a broad and in-depth debate on these issues, involving representatives of sports institutions, government authorities, companies in the sector, specialists and other interested parties,” justifies Romário.
Vice-president of the commission, senator Jorge Kajuru and other senators highlighted that the issue of regulation is urgent. Kajuru is the author of Bill 2667/2023, which increases the penalties for fraud in the results of sports competitions; and Bill 845/2023, which regulates the operation of bookmakers in the country.
“We must act with firmness, courage and independence to combat this harmful practice and restore the confidence of fans, athletes and society as a whole in this sport that we love so much,” said Kajuru.
The Bill that increases the penalty for the crime of match-fixing awaits the receipt of amendments (deadline until July 14) to follow the Senate rite, and should be forwarded as soon as they are attached to the Sports Commission and the Constitution and Justice, where it will have a terminating character.
