The author of the two invitation requests is the CPI rapporteur, Senator Romário (PL-RJ). He argues that it is essential for the CPI to understand the IBJR's stance on the regulation of sports betting and on best practices for "responsible gambling."
In his request, Romário notes that the entity includes among its members the main betting houses operating in Brazil. Furthermore, Romário states that the IBJR has played a significant role in discussions about sports betting regulation in recent years, advocating for best practices in transparency, regulation, responsible gambling, fraud prevention, and anti-corruption measures.
Ministry of Sports
According to Romário, hearing from Giovanni Rocco Neto is also important because the newly created National Secretariat for Sports Betting, which is part of the Ministry of Sports, is tasked with monitoring and overseeing issues related to sports betting, ensuring that this activity does not negatively impact the integrity of games or the healthy development of sports.
“This CPI intends to hear from the secretary about the action plans being developed, as well as to understand the oversight structure being put in place to perform this crucial role in combating match-fixing in sports betting,” states the request.
Summoning of players
Before the hearings, parliamentarians will vote on requests this Tuesday, including one that summons Luiz Henrique André Rosa da Silva, a forward for Botafogo. This request comes from the CPI president, Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO). He has also issued a request to invite, as a witness, Neto, the former soccer player and sports commentator for Grupo Bandeirantes de Televisão.
Another request to be voted on is from Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), vice president of the committee, calling for the CPI to hear testimony from soccer player Bruno Henrique.
