‘Bets’ agree with concerns of Anatel president, ask for urgent blocking of illegal websites

The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) shares the concern expressed by Anatel president, Carlos Baigorri, about the ineffectiveness of blocking illegal gambling sites. This scenario could jeopardize the regulation of the Brazilian market and the effective separation between the “wheat and the chaff.” ANJL sees an alarming proliferation of these platforms due to the lack of effective measures to take them down.

In discussions with market operators in recent days, ANJL learned that currently more than two thousand illegal domains are fully operational in Brazil, in addition to the thousands that have already been taken offline by Anatel, by order of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), of the Ministry of Finance.

It is no wonder that in a recent interview, the president of Anatel stated that the country is “to try to dry water” in relation to the blocking of illegal 'Bets' (as the operators are called in Brazil), since the regulatory agency alone does not have the means to effectively and permanently take down these sites.

We recognize the diligence and seriousness of the work being carried out by the Ministry of Finance, in addition to Anatel’s efforts to block the sites. But the industry needs an effective response. Serious and legal sites will not be able to withstand the competition from illegal sites,” says ANJL president Plínio Lemos Jorge.

We need to separate the wheat from the chaff, and this will only happen with a tough fight against illegal sites, which have harmed society and tarnished the image and reputation of legal 'bets',” he says.

ANJL emphasizes that the industry’s greatest concern is the effectiveness of the regulation of the Brazilian market, which is scheduled to begin on January 1.

The continued operation of illegal websites – which use misleading advertising, do not collect taxes and do not provide any support or security to bettors – carries with it the dangerous potential to weaken the entire regulated environment and position Brazil as a pariah in the global betting market.

Launched in March 2023, the National Association of Games and Lotteries defends the interests of its members, the sector and responsible and honest gaming, always guided by the promotion of sports, the security of bets and the contribution to the economic development of the country.

Among its members are galera.bet/Playtech, Big Brazil, F12, PagBet, Betnacional, Mr. Jack, Parimatch, BetFast, Aposta Ganha, Liderança Capitalização, Z.ro Bank, Propane, Paag, Clear Sale, BetBox tv, StarsPay, 1xBet, PG Soft, Jogalimpo, Oddfair and Responsa.
