Without plans to return to the market

PokerStars disagrees with Peru's new online gambling regulation and exits the country

Since Thursday (8) last week, PokerStars is no longer accepting players from Peru at its tables. The announcement was made by the room on the PokerStars LATAM profile on X (formerly Twitter) and cites a change in Peruvian law as the reason for ending operations in the country. Law 31.557, passed in October, regulates the exploitation of online gaming and sports betting and came into effect on the day of PokerStars' announcement.

"Due to the new regulation, starting this Thursday, February 8, our services will not be available in Peru," the statement says, also ensuring the payment of all players in the country. "We want to ensure that players' funds are safe and can be withdrawn at any time."

"Entries in tournaments that had not yet started will be refunded, and non-promotional rewards will be converted into cash and added to your accounts," the post says. In response to a follower's question, the profile also stated that "due to the new regulation and the deadlines set, we have decided not to apply for a license."

The new regulation mentioned is Law No. 31.557, which was passed last October and regulates the exploitation of online gaming and sports betting. Sites wishing to operate in the country now need a license from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Also in response to a follower's question, the PokerStars LATAM profile stated: "At the moment, there are no plans to return to this market, but we will inform of any news or changes in the situation."
