President of the CPI for sports betting defends suspension of the Brazilian football championship

Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), president of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting, expressed his support for the request of the National Association of Football Referees (ANAF) for the Brazilian football championship to be paralyzed. The statement was made during a CPI session held this Tuesday (23) to discuss the matter, amid investigations into possible irregularities in football.

The statement was made after receiving a report from the owner of Botafogo, John Textor, with signs of manipulation of last year's games. Kajuru's statement was also motivated by a note from the National Association of Football Referees (Anaf), which defended the interruption of the championship in protest of the businessman's testimony at the CPI.

Kajuru highlighted the importance of responding to ANAF's request, stating that the association has solid grounds to request the interruption of the championship. The senator emphasized the CPI's commitment to carrying out a thorough investigation, with the support of the Federal Police (PF) and the Attorney General's Office (PGR), with the aim of revealing the truth behind what he classified as “the biggest scandal in the history of Brazilian football.”

Furthermore, Kajuru mentioned the existence of an extensive report, consisting of 180 pages, and recordings and videos, the details of which will be kept secret from the courts. The senator highlighted that the main reason for requesting the suspension of the football tournament are the complaints related to the functioning of the video referee system (VAR), raised during the testimony of Botafogo owner, John Textor, to the CPI.

The initiative was initially proposed by the National Association of Football Referees (Anaf), through president Salmo Valentim, due to statements by American businessman John Textor, owner of SAF do Botafogo, questioning the integrity of the video referee (VAR).

The commission will have another session today, Wednesday 24th, starting at 2pm, to discuss Textor's report in more depth. The president of the CPI, senator Jorge Kajuru, stated: “We have enough evidence to investigate in detail, independently, and reach conclusions in our next meetings.”

Kajuru's position reflects growing concern about the integrity of Brazilian football, as the CPI continues its investigations into possible match-fixing and illegal sports betting.
