Deputies Chamber to hold public hearing on payments due to athletes for sports betting

The Permanent Subcommittee on Sports Betting Regulation (Cespo/Subapost) will hold a public hearing to discuss payments due to athletes in exchange for the use of their names, nicknames, and images in sports betting products. The meeting takes place this Wednesday (22), starting at 2 p.m. Giovani Rocco Neto, National Secretary of Sports Betting at the Ministry of Sports, has already confirmed his attendance. The debate was requested by Representative Caio Vianna.

The public hearing is being held in response to Request 125, filed by Representative Caio Vianna, to continue discussions initiated at a similar meeting in early September, to further the discussion and seek solutions.

Caio Vianna points out in his justification that Law No. 14,790 requires that a portion of the gross revenue from fixed-odds bets be allocated to Brazilian athletes in return for the use of their names, sports nicknames, and images.

"These payments are not yet being made. This is an urgent matter, as athletes are the foundation of the sporting spectacle, but they continue to receive no compensation, while their images continue to be widely used on betting platforms," Caio Vianna notes.
