New attack on the sector

Lula government uses kitten inspired by Teletubbies’ Baby Sun to criticize sports betting

The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) shared a humorous video on social media this Wednesday (22) targeting betting companies. The piece features a “sun kitten,” a character inspired by the Baby Sun from the children’s show Teletubbies, as a playful way to reinforce the idea of increasing taxes on the sector.

According to the government, the proposal aims to raise the tax on betting from 12% to 18%, though the bill has yet to advance in Congress. Still, the administration says it does not intend to abandon the initiative.

Seeking to draw the public’s attention in a lighthearted manner, the government used childhood-inspired imagery to engage people in the debate over betting companies’ tax burden.

When sharing the video, the government stated that the proposal is “to raise the tax burden on bets from 12% to 18%, but the bill has not moved forward in Congress. But we’re not giving up,” the post added.
