Betting and data: Flashscore’s role in the new era of Brazilian sports

Flashscore is one of the world's largest real-time statistics app. In Brazil alone, the platform has over 25 million users, 70% of whom are also bettors. In an exclusive interview with GMB, Alexandre Vasconcellos, the local regional director, discusses the factors that have driven the brand's growth in the country, the natural intersection between statistics and betting, and the opportunities emerging in a market undergoing digital and regulatory transformation.

The flagship brand of Livesport, a Czech company founded in 2006, Flashscore dominates the global market with a wide range of sports content, from real-time live scores to multimedia coverage. The brand is widely recognized among sports fans in over 40 countries.

Globally, the platform attracts over 100 million monthly visitors, and its mobile apps have exceeded 175 million downloads. In Brazil, the company has reached 25 million app downloads, with more than 7 million monthly active users, 5 million registered users, and over 31.3 billion page views in 2024.

In Brazil, the company’s spokesperson is Alexandre Vasconcellos, who serves as Regional Manager. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Vasconcellos previously worked in communications for Fluminense FC, led marketing at Maracanã Stadium, worked at iFood, and was Head of Football at End to End, a sports marketing agency.

With his extensive background, Alexandre is well positioned to discuss Flashscore’s growth in Brazil, explain how statistics are transforming the bettor’s journey, and highlight emerging trends in this rapidly expanding market.

GMB – Flashscore is currently the world’s largest real-time sports statistics app. Brazil has surpassed 25 million downloads. What factors do you think explain this strong adoption among Brazilian users?
Alexandre Vasconcellos - Our success in Brazil can be explained by three pillars: Brazilian culture, our product, and our focus on the right channels—all interconnected. Flashscore is an easy-to-use app (and website) with fast notifications and highly accurate data and information. As Brazilians become increasingly interested in understanding the game beyond debates and in following multiple matches, teams, and athletes simultaneously, our platform fits perfectly into this growing demand for a new way to consume sports.

And how did users find us? Through a consistent, long-term effort involving search engine optimization (SEO), strong app store reputation (Google Play and App Store/iOS), and word of mouth—still very powerful in a country with such strong social interaction, both offline and online.

According to Flashscore data, about 70% of users are also bettors. How does the company view this intersection between statistics and sports betting?
It’s a natural connection for our product. Following sports through data and statistics comes not only from betting but also from video games, football management simulators, and social media. As users become familiar with numbers on our platform, those who were only curious about betting discover that we’re a great ally for informed betting, using our platform’s intelligence to their advantage.

Flashscore positions itself as a sports data and content platform. Is there any type of partnership or direct integration with betting operators in Brazil or other markets?
We partner with leading betting operators in Brazil and virtually all major markets, especially regulated ones. Essentially, our business model resembles that of a media company, with industry players as our main B2B clients through brand exposure and odds comparison.

Of course, we also have a strong focus on high-quality affiliation, which has made us a global benchmark in iGaming, as proven by multiple Best Affiliate awards across several continents.

Tools like Follow Player show the app’s potential to deliver personalized data. How is this feature being used by bettors?
Football fans increasingly want to follow their idols, no matter where they play. Meanwhile, more analytical bettors focus on individual player stats and matchups, seeking opportunities in markets such as yellow cards, shots on goal, or corners.

The Follow Player feature was created to meet this demand for athlete-centered insights, allowing users to receive real-time notifications about every key moment involving their chosen player. Adoption has been extremely fast, and feedback has been excellent—it truly makes a difference for users who want speed and precision when following multiple interests on match days.

How does Flashscore ensure the integrity and reliability of its real-time information — a crucial issue for the betting market?
Integrity and reliability are among our top priorities at every stage. From choosing data provider partners to conducting specialized audits combining advanced technology and human oversight, everything we do is designed to deliver the most accurate, secure, and fast information to our users.
We invest in cutting-edge proprietary technologies, build strategic partnerships such as with StatsPerform/Opta, and continuously train our technical teams involved in every step of our operations.

With Brazil advancing toward sports betting regulation, how does Flashscore approach these changes, and what opportunities or challenges do they bring? Does the company plan to support responsible gambling, education, or awareness initiatives?
We closely monitor the regulatory process because we prefer to operate in regulated markets. Clear rules, transparency, and solid projects favor long-term players. On our side, we review all communication materials with strict attention to current regulations.

Are there plans to introduce new content formats for bettors, such as analyses or predictions? Beyond football, what sports and tournaments are most popular among Brazilian bettors?
In the coming months, we’ll introduce new features, statistical visualizations, and analyses on our platforms—and even on social media—to bring more value to users who want to stay informed before, during, and after matches.

Looking at our audience, football remains the main attraction. In Brazil, there is traditional interest in basketball, volleyball, and MMA, and we’re also seeing growing engagement in tennis, Formula 1, and table tennis. Brazilian athletes like Hugo Calderano and João Fonseca play a key role in this trend, as does the increasing visibility and media coverage of these sports on TV and streaming platforms.

You come from a sports marketing background and have worked with major brands like Maracanã and iFood. How has this experience influenced your view of the connection between data, fans, and digital engagement?
Flashscore—and the entire iGaming boom in Brazil—sits at the intersection of two worlds where I’ve spent most of my career: Sports and Technology. That gives me an advantage in understanding how these two universes have converged.

iFood connects the physical and digital through innovation in a uniquely Brazilian way. Maracanã, on the other hand, is where the present meets the eternal—that’s why we call it “The House of the Unforgettable.”

More and more, sports and the broader ‘sportainment’ ecosystem are becoming subfields of the information industry. Everything overlaps and influences everything else in a world where life unfolds increasingly in digital spaces—including physical life. The most influential consumers today are digital natives or grew up with video games and the internet.

We operate in the part of the sports world most attuned to this language. Our users provide a unique window into current consumption behavior and future trends. It’s a privilege to work in a role that offers such a broad view of both the present and the future.

In terms of partnerships, what can we expect from Flashscore in Brazil in the coming months? Are there ongoing discussions with clubs, federations, or betting houses?
We’re in contact with the entire industry, now with an even greater vision and ambition to integrate more deeply into Brazil’s sports value chain. We’re already leaders in our niche, but we want to become even more relevant as a brand and expand our presence and reach.

Real-time statistics are becoming increasingly decisive in betting. Do you believe we’ll see a future where data and artificial intelligence guide most betting decisions?
That’s clearly where things are heading. As artificial intelligence matures beyond large language models (LLMs), more fans will have access to powerful tools to explore opportunities across all aspects of sports.

That’s why I believe that, in the AI era, those who master new technologies will be able to amplify their human intelligence to another level, achieving truly unique differentiation.
