A new Senate bill seeks to increase taxation on physical and online fixed-odds betting games ('Bets').
The proposed increase is a temporary measure that would remain in effect until the implementation of the Selective Tax provided for in the Fiscal Reform, which aims to discourage the consumption of goods and services considered harmful to health or the environment.
According to the proposal, the plan is to raise the tax rate from 12% to 27.5%, with 10% of the collected amount allocated exclusively to the healthcare sector, and the remaining 17.5% directed to other public-interest purposes.
The bill was introduced by Senator Sérgio Petecão, who believes the measure will strengthen social security funding and promote tax fairness.
“We have to tax — gaming must pay its share. Whoever wants to play can play, but it doesn’t bring benefits to citizens. Under our proposal, the tax will rise to 27.5%, with 10% going to healthcare and 17.5% to other legally established purposes,” said Petecão.
“Online betting moved around R$ 50 billion (9.2bn) in 2023, so there are a lot of people making money off our population,” he added.
The bill that temporarily increases the taxation on betting games will now be referred to the Senate committees for analysis.
