“Regarding increasing the taxation of betting to finance public security, I think it is a matter that, if voted on, would have broad support within the Chamber of Deputies. We understand that there is indeed a lack of money for security,” stated Hugo Motta.
The Speaker of the Chamber added: “This will only be possible if we find measures that will help in this financing. And I think this is a very intelligent measure to increase investments in public security in this country.”
Motta said that during the fits days of November the Chamber wants to consider a bill that changes the purpose of tax collection on bets to allocate it to security.
In addition, the parliamentarian stated that leaders should also discuss a timetable for the processing of the bill that toughens rules against taxpayers considered habitual debtors. The matter has been under urgent consideration since Thursday, the 30th. The president of the Chamber said that the proposal is a "priority" on the security agenda.
In the interview, Motta defended "radicalizing" actions against organized crime and mentioned the need to stifle financial money laundering operations.
Regarding equating crimes of criminal factions to terrorism, Motta considered: "We have to have a discussion about national sovereignty. We have to take that into account. But we also can't think that we're going to confront organized crime without radicalizing," he declared.
