“BMM sees Brazil as a regulatory benchmark in LatiAm and is now eager to embrace land-based gaming”

Daniel Magariños, Senior Director LatAm at BMM Testlabs, spoke exclusively with GMB, highlighting the success of SBC Lisbon and the strong Brazilian presence at the event. He highlighted the inauguration of the laboratory in São Paulo and stated that Brazil serves as a regulatory example for Latin America. Executive revealed plans to expand BMM's services to cover all sectors, including VLTs, and his high expectations for the legalization of land-based gaming.

GMB – What did you think of SBC Lisbon, and how were BMM’s interactions at the event, especially with the many Brazilians who attended in force?
Daniel Magariños – There were indeed a lot of people. It was my first time attending this fair, and in my opinion, it’s an excellent event. I think it’s truly a successful show. Our presence here is extremely important. We’re very happy to have come. A large part of the team from our Barcelona office in Spain is here, along with me representing Latin America. So, we’re very pleased with the opportunities to close new deal, it’s really been a complete success.

As one of the executives responsible for BMM’s business in Brazil, how were your meetings with Brazilian companies during the event?
I already had several meetings scheduled with people from Brazil, and I also met many others during the fair. The Brazilian presence here in Lisbon was really significant. Many excellent companies are already our clients, while others are potential ones.

Honestly, we’re more than satisfied with Brazil’s strong participation. It’s practically a continent of its own within the Americas, and we’re very pleased with the progress they’ve made regarding regulation.

It’s been eight months since Brazil began regulating its market. How do you assess this initial stage now that things are taking shape?
As with any new regulatory implementation—especially in a large country like Brazil—you always start with an initial concept that matures, improves, and is gradually fine-tuned. I think Brazil is on the right path. Of course, there are still things to be done—there always are—but overall, the country now has a regulatory framework with significant solvency, which is extremely important.

With its regulation, can Brazil serve as a model for other Latin American countries?
Without a doubt. Just as Brazil learned from other jurisdictions to avoid repeating past mistakes—like those made earlier in Colombia and Peru—it is now setting a benchmark. I think that’s very important. What I find crucial is that regulators always maintain open communication with testing laboratories.

We’re present in more than 500 jurisdictions around the world, so our experience and insights in these processes are highly valuable for regulation. In Colombia and Peru, we’ve had extensive dialogue and knowledge exchange, which I believe has led to significant improvements in those markets.

Actually, it’s not just 500 jurisdictions anymore—it’s over 501 now, since BMM has opened a new lab in Brazil. How is the work progressing with your Brazilian team?
You’re absolutely right. Fortunately, we inaugurated our laboratory in São Paulo in August. You were there with us, and it was a great honor. It’s a major challenge and an important commitment to a market that truly deserves it. The presence of our BMM lab in Brazil represents a before and after for all operations in Latin America. It’s a very important milestone, and we’re delighted about it.

What are BMM’s plans for the coming months in Brazil?
To complete the implementation of the office and place the full team in the right positions to meet all needs in Brazil—both for online operations and for VLTs, which are currently undergoing a major expansion phase. BMM will continue to provide 100% of the necessary services to our client portfolio, which is extremely important.

And you’re also waiting for the land-based segment?
Yes. I didn’t want to mention it specifically, but yes—we’re also eagerly anticipating the land-based segment, which will be a real boom. We’re fully prepared to deliver services for the entire physical gaming sector as well.
