São Paulo City Council Tourism Committee discusses the impact of casinos on the economy

The São Paulo City Council Tourism Committee discussed the impact of the hotel and casino industry on the city this Tuesday (7). The committee welcomed Bruno Omori, president of IDT-CEMA and director of Expotel, to detail the benefits of these activities for the economy and society.

Omori began his participation by presenting information about Expotel – the International Fair for Hospitality and Gastronomy – which will take place on March 25 and 26, 2026, as well as data on the sector.

According to IDT-CEMA (Institute for the Development of Tourism, Culture, Sports and the Environment), the sector generates approximately R$ 20.1 billion (US$3.8bn) in daily revenues and around 365,000 jobs.

In addition to sharing information related to the hospitality industry, Omori also highlighted the relevance of approving Bill 2234/2022 – currently awaiting a vote in the Senate – which could encourage the development of casinos integrated into resorts or tourism-focused casinos, boosting tax revenue and reducing unemployment.

According to him, it is essential that the matter moves forward with proper legislative rigor, in order to regulate activities and prevent the informal market, which could open loopholes for criminal organizations to operate.

Another topic addressed was ludopathy – gambling addiction – which has gained attention recently due to the growing popularity of betting platforms. “According to federal legislation, 3% of the billions in revenue generated will be allocated to the treatment of people with this type of problem,” emphasized Bruno Omori.

The chairman of the committee, Councilor Gilberto Nascimento, took the opportunity to highlight the group’s activities. “Here, we seek to understand and assess the impact of everything that has been happening in the tourism, gastronomy, and leisure sectors,” he stated.
