Only three operators can offer online gambling

Chile’s Supreme Court gives internet providers five days to block gambling sites

The Supreme Court has ordered major internet companies operating in Chile to block access to all illegal online betting sites within five (5) days. This ruling, which was enforced last Wednesday (19), makes effective a decision made at the end of last month. The order is directed at companies including Claro, Entel, GTD, Telefónica, WOM, and VTR

The Supreme Court established that only Polla Chilena de Beneficencia, Lotería de Concepción, and Teletrak have the legal authorization to offer online gambling, deeming other platforms illegal.

The order is directed at companies including Claro, Entel, GTD, Telefónica, WOM, and VTR.

Not only must these companies implement the blockages, but they are also required to report the methods used to the Supreme Court and are subject to judicial oversight.

Polla Chilena de Beneficencia welcomed the measure, stating that since 2021 they have communicated to society about the “violation of the current law and the harm it has caused in our country.”

The institution reported that this “opaque circuit” moves hundreds of millions of dollars without effective control and has led to effects such as “the uncontrolled increase of problematic gambling, a significant flow of illegal bank transfers,” and “the concerning infiltration” into activities like professional sports in Chile, exposing the public to risks such as scams and addiction.
