Brazilian government has already taken down nearly 23,000 illegal betting sites

Daniele Cardoso, deputy secretary of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance (SPA), updated the number of illegal betting sites taken down with Anatel. So far, nearly 23,000 platforms not authorized by the Federal and State governments have been blocked. The data was announced during the Forum on Awareness and Protection of Online Gamblers, promoted by Galerabet in São Paulo last week.

This action is part of the Brazilian government's effort to curb the growth of illegal betting and strengthen the regulated betting market in the country.

According to Daniele Cardoso, Deputy Secretary of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), the monitoring of betting houses is carried out through technical cooperation agreements with the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and the National Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (Conar), in addition to complaints received directly by the SPA.

Furthermore, according to the secretary, new regulations for the financial sector, which prevent payment companies and financial institutions from enabling transactions for unauthorized platforms, have also promoted the exclusion of unlicensed websites.

This measure was reinforced by SPA/MF Ordinance No. 566, recently published, which obliges banks and payment intermediaries to monitor and report suspicious activities to the Central Bank, Federal Police, and Federal Revenue Service.

“We are closing the net to prevent the creation of new illegal betting sites,” said Daniele at the Forum on Awareness and Protection of Online Gamblers, promoted by Galerabet.

The deputy secretary also highlighted at the meeting that the government should soon launch a national platform for self-exclusion of websites with gambling.
