The proposal, authored by the federal government and reported by Congressman Mendonça Filho, aims to expand the federal government’s role in public security. The special committee is chaired by Congressman Aluisio Mendes.
Rodrigues’s comments came amid the aftermath of a major police operation in Rio de Janeiro that left more than 120 people dead. The suggestion to increase the portion of ‘Bets’ revenue allocated to security was made by Congressman Alberto Fraga, coordinator of the Public Security Parliamentary Front, known as the bancada da bala (“bullet caucus”).
“We are always concerned, and I start with Congressman Fraga’s remarks on the issue of ‘Bets’, about increasing the percentage allocated to public security. This is a central issue and would benefit not only the Federal Police but all police forces across Brazil. Given the profitability of these bets, such a measure would be extremely welcome and very helpful,” said Andrei Passos Rodrigues.
The government previously attempted to raise the taxation on ‘Bets’ through a Provisional Measure, but no agreement was reached with Congress. Nonetheless, the Executive Branch is seeking to revive the initiative through a new bill.
Rodrigues also used his speech before the committee to ask lawmakers to allocate budget amendments to the Federal Police — a request he had already made in July during a session of the Public Security Committee.
