The Instituto Brasileiro de Jogo Responsável (IBJR), which brings together the main sports betting companies in Brazil and worldwide, believes that the recent decision by the UK Gambling Commission, which suspended the license of the provider Spribe, creator of the game popularly known as Aviator, reinforces the urgency for Brazil to also regulate technology and online game providers within the country’s legal betting system.
The episode highlights an essential principle for the integrity of the sector: an authorized supplier must operate exclusively in the regulated market, offering its products and services only to licensed operators subject to state supervision. This rule ensures that the technology used in betting — from game algorithms to payment systems — complies with security, transparency, and social responsibility standards.
By including supplier regulation in its agenda, the Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas is taking a decisive step toward establishing a competitive and trustworthy environment. However, it is crucial that the Brazilian model follows the standards of more mature jurisdictions, establishing control mechanisms that prevent licensed providers from simultaneously operating in the illegal market — under penalty of license revocation.
The IBJR argues that such exclusivity is essential to protect bettors, ensure fair competition among companies operating within the law, and weaken the illegal market, which relies on technologies with no guarantee of integrity or fair returns to players.
With comprehensive regulation, covering both operators and developers, Brazil will be able to strengthen the credibility of the industry, attract investments, and build a truly responsible and sustainable betting ecosystem.
