Flamengo holds lecture on betting 20 days before Bruno Henrique is indicted

Amid growing investigations into match-fixing in Brazilian football, Flamengo held a lecture at Ninho do Urubu last March 27 to warn its players about the risks of sports betting. The meeting took place just 20 days before striker Bruno Henrique was indicted by the Federal Police in the Operation ‘Penalidade Máxima’.The meeting lasted 50 minutes and gave the athletes the opportunity to ask any questions they might have.

"The idea was to talk to the professional team and the coaching staff based on what we call ongoing education. Athletes need to be aware of these issues that are so present in the day-to-day life of professional and amateur football today," said Marcos Motta, Lawyer and Vice President of Administration.

Issues involving sports integrity, sports betting, doping cases and disciplinary issues. So our idea was to clarify some of these points with some practical, clear, real examples of what happens on a daily basis in sports courts so that it is a preventive issue and not a reactive one when the case has already been consummated,” he said.

The lecture was very useful, as it addressed extremely relevant topics today, especially sports betting and doping. It was essential that the athletes listen to experts on the subject and understand all the necessary precautions to avoid falling into these traps. I was very satisfied,” added José Boto, Flamengo’s Football Director.

The 'Rubro-Negro' team has drawn up a code of conduct to instruct athletes about risks and will also present it to the youth and women’s football teams. On the occasion, in addition to Motta, the club’s general and legal vice president, Flávio Willeman, and lawyer Michel Assef Filho also participated in the lecture.

The Bruno Henrique case

On Tuesday (15), the Federal Police indicted Bruno Henrique, from Flamengo, for allegedly forcing a yellow card in a game against Santos, in the 2023 Brasileirão, and benefiting bettors. In this sense, the investigation report has 84 pages and was submitted to the Court this week.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Federal District (MPDF) reported that it should file a formal complaint against the athlete by the end of April or beginning of May. It will be up to the Court to decide whether to accept the accusation and make the player a defendant. Thus, the complaint is based on article 200 of the General Sports Law, and he can face up to six years in prison.

In addition to the player, his brother, Wander, his sister-in-law Ludmylla Araújo Lima, and the athlete's cousin, Poliana Ester Nunes Cardoso, were also indicted. Six other close friends of the brother are also under investigation: Claudinei Vitor Mosquete Bassan, Rafaela Cristina Elias Bassan, Henrique Mosquete do Nascimento, Andryl Sales Nascimento dos Reis, Max Evangelista Amorim and Douglas Ribeiro Pina Barcelos.

Finally, Flamengo informed, through a note, that it has not yet received official notification from the authorities and reinforced the defense of the presumption of innocence.
