Hearing requested by Congressman Bacelar

House Committee to discuss combating illegal ‘Bets’ and measures to curb tax evasion

The House Financial Oversight and Control Committee approved two requests this Wednesday (23) to discuss the issue of the so-called ‘Bets’ and measures to combat illegal gambling in Brazil. It is chaired by Congressman Bacelar and one of the requests was authored by him. The date has yet to be defined.

Congressman Bacelar's request calls for a public hearing to discuss the measures adopted by the Lula government to combat illegal fixed-odds betting operators in the Brazilian market. Bacelar cites the problem of betting houses that evade taxes and fail to fulfill their duty to protect bettors and Responsible Gaming.

According to the deputy from Bahia, although the regulation of the betting market in Brazil represented a significant step in creating a safer environment for bettors and in the effort to ensure due collection of taxes generated by this activity, reports continue to emerge about the activities of illegal operators in the Brazilian betting market.

“The damage caused by these illegal operators is profound, because in addition to compromising the country's tax system, they put at risk the financial health of many citizens who bet without any regulation or adequate protection. The lack of efficient supervision and clear measures to protect bettors and promote responsible gaming further increases the vulnerability of individuals who participate in these platforms,” said deputy Bacelar.

Bacelar suggests that the Secretary of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance, Régis Dudena; the general director of the Federal Police, Andrei Augusto Passos Rodrigues; the national secretary for consumers, Wadih Damous Filho; and other authorities be invited to the hearing.

“Our goal is to strengthen initiatives that seek to regulate the sector and guarantee a safe and responsible environment for all involved, as well as ensure due federal revenue and the protection of citizens’ rights,” argues Bacelar.

The other request on the subject of betting approved at the meeting this Wednesday was presented by Congressman Zucco. The congressman requests that a hearing be held to discuss with representatives of the Executive, the financial system and the Judiciary oversight and control actions over payment and financial institutions to suppress the illegal betting market.
