Brazil’s acting president defends ‘Bets’ against supermarket sector, opposed to the activity

Acting president Geraldo Alckmin once again defended the regulated market for sports betting and online gaming in Brazil. This time, he spoke before an audience that is mostly against the activity, the supermarket sector. The segment has been using unsustainable arguments to claim that players stop consuming their products to bet.

In yet another demonstration of support for the sector and the government's discourse on the benefits of the regulated iGaming market, Geraldo Alckmin, acting president and minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, once again stated that the government has been working to increase revenue in the country from the activity.

Among other topics in his presentation at the Apas Show Festival 2025, Alckmin addressed sports betting and online gaming.

According to the vice president, who is heading the Executive Branch due to President Lula's trip to the East, "there was no regulation, now we are taxing and we need to tighten that up," he said during the opening of Apas Show 2025, a supermarket sector trade fair.

On other occasions, he refuted inconsistent information that spending on online sports betting caused a drop in retail and increased the population's debt, and he also questioned the Central Bank's conclusions about family spending on 'Bets' (as the operators are called in Brazil).

Alckmin even stated that he believes in well-done regulation that would bring results; otherwise, the government could prohibit the activity.

By giving his testimony before a sector that is against betting, the vice president, acting as head of the Executive Branch, demonstrates that the government is focused on increasing revenue, but at the same time monitoring compliance with the rules by the regulated iGaming market in Brazil.
