ANJL returns to Febraban in search of support from banks for the regulated betting market

The importance of financial institutions in combating illegal betting websites and the current panorama of the regulated market of ‘Bets’ in the country were the topics of the meeting between the president of the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), Plínio Lemos Jorge, and the legal director of the entity, Pietro Cardia Lorenzoni. It took place on Wednesday (30) this week at the headquarters of the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban).

On the occasion, the two participated in the Money Laundering Prevention Committee (PLD), led by Febraban's director of Economics, Prudential Regulation and Risks, Rubens Sardenberg.

Bitcoin houses and online gaming sites that have been legalized are required, by order of the Ministry of Finance, to maintain plans to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

However, in the opinion of the president of ANJL, the greatest risk comes from the clandestine betting industry, which operates outside the rules that regulate the sector in Brazil. For him, the support of banks in the crackdown on illegal websites is essential for the construction of a safe, transparent and legally stable environment for operators and bettors.

“It was a very positive meeting. Febraban is the largest entity representing Brazilian banks and is a reference in initiatives to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism in the financial system,” said Plínio Lemos Jorge, who was at the Federation in March to also discuss issues related to the sector.

“We had the opportunity to debate in this committee with the largest banks in the country and present a clearer vision of the betting market. We reinforced the need for support from financial institutions and the importance of working together to maintain an honest and regulated environment,” he added.

Meeting with sports committees

The president of ANJL and the entity's legal director also met with representatives of the Brazilian Club Committee (CBC), the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the National Transfer Office (ENDR). The topic on the agenda was the allocation of resources from sports betting to finance national sports.

According to Plínio, it was an opportunity to align the expectations of the sports sector with regard to financing, expanding opportunities for current and new athletes and investing in grassroots and professional championships, with what will be allocated from transfers from sports betting houses and online games.

"We are talking about public policies, improving the country's sports, which can transform lives, bring more inclusion and opportunities to young people who are talented but do not have an adequate structure to develop as athletes and train," said ANJL’s president.
