Unprecedented survey by Predictus

Brazilians have filed more than 1,100 lawsuits against ‘Bets’ in the last three years

Lawsuits against betting companies have increased exponentially in Brazil in the last three years, following the craze that this market has become in the country, as indicated by an unprecedented survey by Predictus. The legal database identified that, since 2022, 1,156 lawsuits have been filed against companies in the sector in Brazilian courts. And the number has been growing year after year.

At the beginning of the count, 21 lawsuits of this type were recorded in 2022. Now, in 2025, before the end of the first half of the year, there are already 554. The increase was 2,538%, according to Predictus.

Most of the proceedings, in the last three years, were registered in São Paulo (291 lawsuits). Then came Rio de Janeiro (167), Bahia (125) and Minas Gerais (119). Together, the four states account for 60% of the cases initiated during this period.

In general, the incidence follows the size of the consumer markets, except for the case of Bahia: with fewer inhabitants than Minas Gerais, the high volume of lawsuits in the state may indicate a greater propensity of its population to play games, says Predictus. The causes are related to the relationship between bookmakers and consumers and the fulfillment of payments.

The most common complaint is related to prizes that are not paid or denied withdrawals, in which the bettor wins the prize on the website or app and is unable to redeem it. In some of these situations, the platforms allege violations by users in order to not make the payments.

Of the more than a thousand lawsuits filed since 2022, around 80% are still ongoing. Of the 103 that were judged, according to the survey, 55% were dismissed (that is, the consumer lost) and 45% were successful (with partial or full defeats by the bookmakers).

There is also a 3% share in which, according to Predictus, agreements would have led to the closure of cases.
