Bill proposes educational campaign against gambling among children and adolescents in Maranhão

Bill No. 090/25, authored by councilwoman Concita Pinto (PSB), is currently being processed in the City Council of São Luís, in Maranhão state. The project establishes the Guidance and Awareness Campaign “Gambling is not a Place for Children.” If approved, June will be set as the month for awareness-raising actions to show that entertainment is intended for adults.

The proposal aims to inform, prevent and combat the involvement of children and adolescents in games of this nature, online betting and any other modalities that involve money and financial rewards.

The campaign will be held annually in June, in reference to the World Day Against Child Labor (June 12), and may also be promoted on other dates defined by the Municipal Department of Education (SEMED).

According to councilwoman Concita Pinto, author of the bill, the growing number of young people are engaging in these practices, which require urgent attention from the government. “It is essential that we create a safe and healthy environment for our children and adolescents, promoting values in schools that strengthen the full development of parents and children,” stated Concita.

The project will be analyzed by the permanent committees of Justice, Education and Social Welfare before being called to the plenary.

It is worth remembering that the iGaming rules prohibit the offering of sports betting and online games to minors under 18 years of age. Operators are required to identify all users. The entire ecosystem is involved, such as companies providing KYC services and payment providers, in addition to the operators.

All advertising for sports betting and online games, according to the rules of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), must be directed to those over 18 years of age and cannot be broadcast in environments predominantly attended by minors.
