Deputies advance in bill that prohibit betting on cards, fouls and corners in Brazilian football

Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies took another step towards prohibiting betting on cards and other specific events in football, such as fouls and corners. Bill 2.842/2023, which deals with the topic, received a favorable opinion in the Sports Committee. Authored by deputies Ricardo Ayres and Daniel Agrobom, the proposal seeks to protect sports integrity in the face of match-fixing scandals in Brazilian football.

Frequent cases prompted Bill

The rapporteur of the text, deputy Luciano Vieira, highlighted the importance of the measure: “It aims to reduce the incidence of unsportsmanlike behavior by athletes, referees or any other individual with significant influence over games.

In addition, he reinforced that the frequency of reports of match-fixing requires preventive actions to preserve the credibility of the sport.

Concerns about sports integrity in football have grown in recent years. Alleged cases of manipulation have become frequent in the news, revealing the urgency of adopting effective mechanisms to prevent them. In addition to compromising the image of the sport, these practices harm the experience of passionate fans and expose good-faith bettors to financial risks.”

The expectation is that the ban on betting on cards and other minor events in football matches will help curb irregular practices.

Paquetá's case drew attention to betting on cards

Bill 2,842/2023 was incorporated into Bill 4,665/2023, authored by congressman Felipe Carreras. This bill also provides for the prohibition of betting on “individual” plays, that is, it would focus on events that depend on the action of a single player. In addition, the proposal establishes punishments for those who engage in match-fixing.

The vote should take place amid recent cases that have generated great repercussions. For example, players such as Lucas Paquetá, from West Ham, and Bruno Henrique, from Flamengo. Both face accusations of benefiting people who placed bets on cards.

So far, both athletes have vehemently denied the accusations. However, the leaking of information about the cases has increased distrust towards the two players.

Recently, the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) received the Federal Police investigation into Bruno Henrique's case.
