Brazil vice president wants a tax even higher than 18% proposed by Minister Haddad for ‘Bets’

Speaking to an audience of supermarket owners, the Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, defended a tax even higher than the 18% proposed by Minister Fernando Haddad for the so-called ‘Bets’. This Tuesday (10), at the opening of the 5th National Supply Chain Forum (FCNA) organized by the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (ABRAS), he defended even more taxation and restrictions on advertising by betting houses.

In a speech to supply chain representatives, Alckmin stated that online betting advertisements must follow the rules of the Consumer Protection Code. “Saying that someone will get rich or become a millionaire by playing bets is clearly misleading advertising,” he declared.

The vice president compared addiction to virtual games to dependency on cigarettes and alcohol and advocated for similar restrictions to those industries: “There must be limits on matters that lead to illnesses.”

Alckmin said that the federal government could work with Congress to bring forward the taxation measures outlined in the tax reform, including the selective tax on betting.

Last Sunday (8), Minister Fernando Haddad proposed increasing the taxation on the GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue) of betting companies from 12% to 18%, as a way to offset the reduction in the IOF tax.

To supermarket representatives, who accuse betting platforms of diverting consumer spending toward gambling, Alckmin said: “The government’s proposal is to increase it to 18%, but we can work with Congress to take it even further,” he stated.

“We need to raise the tax [on betting companies]. I liked your proposal [from Abras]. Not just the 18% proposed by the government, but the 27%. This will help prevent many families from being harmed,” Alckmin said at the event.
