Public Prosecutor's Office charges Bruno Henrique for fraud in betting scheme

Flamengo forward Bruno Henrique was charged by the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) due to his alleged participation in a betting scheme. The player was charged, with eight other people, for the crimes of fraud in the result or event associated with a sports competition. The maximum combined sentences may reach 17 years and 8 months in prison.

The Prosecutor’s Office also requested that the player pay R$2 million (US$360,000) in collective moral damages.

This amount was even proposed as bail to ensure his participation in all phases of the legal proceedings.

"The defendant Bruno Henrique, who played as a forward for the first club, acting freely and knowingly, intentionally and premeditatedly provoked a situation to manipulate an event related to the sports competition, namely his punishment with a card by the match referee," reads a section of the complaint filed by the Prosecutor’s Office (MP), which UOL accessed.

"Then, at the planned moment, at the Mané Garrincha stadium, instigated by his brother Wander, Bruno Henrique deliberately caused a game situation—a reckless blow against the opponent—knowing that it would result in his punishment with a yellow card."

"Based on Article 387, item IV of the Criminal Procedure Code, the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime also requests that the minimum amount of R$2 million be established for compensation for the collective moral damages caused by the criminal acts committed by the defendants."

Other individuals charged include:

- Wander Nunes Pinto Júnior – Bruno Henrique’s brother

- Ludymilla Araújo Lima – Bruno Henrique’s sister-in-law

- Poliana Nunes Cardoso – Bruno Henrique’s cousin

- Claudinei Vitor Mosquete Bassan – friend of Wander

- Rafaela Cristina Elias Bassan – Claudinei’s wife

- Henrique Mosquete do Nascimento – Claudinei’s brother

- Andryl Sales Nascimento dos Reis – Claudinei’s friend

- Max Evangelista Amorim – friend of Andryl

There was also another person under investigation, Douglas Ribeiro de Pina Barcelos, but according to the Prosecutor’s Office, he reached a non-prosecution agreement and will cooperate with the investigation.

The controversial card

The episode at the center of the controversy is the yellow card received by Bruno Henrique during the match against Santos in the 2023 Brazilian Championship. Betting monitoring systems flagged suspicious betting activity in the yellow card market at that time.

This triggered an investigation by the Federal Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office in Brasília. The Federal Police recommended the player be indicted, and now he is officially among the defendants.

Following the formal complaint, the court must approve the Prosecutor’s Office's request to officially make Bruno Henrique a defendant in the case.

Bruno Henrique has traveled to the United States with the Flamengo delegation for the Club World Cup.

He was previously the subject of an inquiry by the Superior Court of Sports Justice, which concluded last week. The Prosecutor’s Office now has up to 60 days to formally charge the player, after which he could be suspended.

As of now, Bruno Henrique remains legally eligible to play for Flamengo.

Wiretapped conversations from the phone of Wander Pinto Júnior, also known as "Juninho" and Bruno Henrique’s brother, indicate that there were coordinated bets on the Flamengo striker receiving a yellow card in the match against Santos.

Wander, also charged by the Prosecutor’s Office, allegedly received prior notice from Bruno about his intention to get booked. Wander reportedly used his wife's betting account to place additional bets, according to intercepted messages.

From Wander, the information was allegedly passed on to another group of bettors, led by Claudinei.

Bettors’ activity

The “tip” received by the betting group prompted movement on platforms the day before the game:

Claudinei Mosquete: KTO – Bet: R$375 (US$67.50) / Return: R$1,125 (US$202.50)

Rafaela Bassan (Claudinei’s wife): galera.bet – Bet: R$380 (US$68.40) / Return: R$1,178 (US$212); Betano – Bet: R$380 / Return: R$1,178

Henrique Mosquete (Claudinei’s brother): Betano – Bet: R$380 / Return: R$1,178; KTO – Bet: R$375 / Return: R$1,125

The suspicious accounts reported by KTO (Claudinei and Henrique) were created on the day of the Flamengo vs Santos match.

The four suspicious accounts reported by galera.bet (Ludymilla, Max, Andryl, and Rafaela) were created the day before the match.

Betano blocked the payouts and canceled the bets.
