Santos promotes lecture with Genius Sports on preventing manipulation in sports betting

Last Friday (27), Santos FC held a lecture entitled “Preventing manipulation in sports betting and Match-Fixing” for employees, athletes and technical committees of the club’s youth teams, both male and female. The objective was to raise awareness about the seriousness of the issue and the procedure to be followed in the event of manipulation. The speaker was Tiago Horta, head of integrity at Genius Sports, a leading sports technology and data company.

The event, promoted by Santos F.C., was given by Tiago Horta, Head of Integrity at Genius Sports, a FIFA partner. He explained to the participants that they are the main target of manipulation cases and detailed the risks involved: from legal consequences — such as loss of career or prison sentence — to recommended procedures in the event of being approached by solicitors, advising immediate reporting.

Tiago Horta stated that the initiative is very important because it helps prevent possible fraud and manipulation. “I showed them why they are at the center of the problem and why this happens and what they should do to protect themselves in this situation. It is a question of risk and consequences. Loss of career and even going to prison. If approached by a recruiter offering an undue advantage, they should report the situation. This way they avoid consequences in the future.”

He also emphasized that the participation of sports entities, such as Santos FC, is essential. “Talking to athletes about the problem of match-fixing is essential today, given the many problems we have faced not only in Brazil, but throughout the world. More cases, more players having their careers ended because of this. For us, it is a pleasure and a mission, which we carry out with great dedication. It is also important for future generations.”

For the club's vice-president, Fernando Bonavides, the initiative was highly relevant: "Athletes from the youth teams and employees had the opportunity to hear from a FIFA-accredited representative on an important and current topic."

Horta emphasized that, with the increase in cases of manipulation in Brazil and around the world, preventive actions like this are an essential "mission", especially to protect future generations.

In addition, the event highlighted the participation of the Ministry of Sports, which signed cooperation agreements with five entities on May 14 — including Genius Sports — to strengthen betting monitoring, sports integrity and combating match-fixing in Brazil. These organizations must offer technology, methodologies and training for professionals who monitor the sector.
