According to a notice sent to users, an unauthorized third party gained access to sensitive personal information, although passwords, identity documents, and payment details were reportedly not compromised.
Flutter stated that the breach was contained and that unauthorized access has been removed, with the assistance of external cybersecurity experts.
However, according to European media outlets, information such as username, email address, contact details, and parts of the home address, including city of residence, may have been compromised.
Betfair hacked
In emails sent to users—already circulating on social media—the company explained that technical data such as device ID and IP address were also accessed.
In an interview with Racing Post, a Flutter spokesperson confirmed the incident and said:
“As soon as the issue was detected, we informed the relevant authorities and launched a full investigation with the support of external experts. The unauthorized access was removed, and the incident was contained.”
Flutter further clarified that none of the accessed data alone would allow unauthorized transactions or direct access to customer accounts. Nevertheless, the company warned users to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts, where scammers impersonate platform representatives to obtain sensitive information.
The incident has been reported to the UK Gambling Commission, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC). All affected users have been individually notified.
World’s largest betting group
This attack comes amid a surge in digital breaches targeting major companies. In June, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) was also targeted by a cyberattack that disrupted internal systems. In recent months, major retailers such as Marks & Spencer and the Co-op chain have suffered similar attacks, which impacted operations for weeks.
With a market value of $50.6 billion, Flutter Entertainment is the largest publicly traded betting company in the world. Together, Betfair and Paddy Power have more than 4.2 million monthly active users, generating $3.6 billion in annual revenue, according to the company’s latest annual report.
Flutter emphasized that “protecting customer information is an absolute priority” and pledged to strengthen its security systems to prevent future incidents in an industry increasingly targeted by hackers.
