Rei do Pitaco’s ‘Jogo Responsa’ series details measures to combat match-fixing

Brazilian betting platform Rei do Pitaco promoted another edition of the ‘Jogo Responsa’, its webinars series dedicated to discussing relevant topics for the sector with a special focus on the protection of gamblers and integrity. In this episode, the highlight was the fight against results manipulation and was attended by Fred Justo, former coordinator of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA).

The latest episode discussed the fight against match-fixing, one of the greatest challenges for the sports and betting markets in Brazil and around the world. One of the key highlights was the important role of betting operators in detecting fraud, reporting to authorities, and adopting preventive measures.

The conversation featured Fred Justo, former coordinator of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting at the Ministry of Finance and a former investigative journalist, who has become a national reference in tackling match-fixing.

During the live chat broadcast on the Rei do Pitaco YouTube channel, Fred shared behind-the-scenes stories from investigations, including his infiltration into criminal groups that manipulate match outcomes to profit from bets.

He warned about the exploitation of vulnerable athletes, especially in lesser-known leagues, as a tool for rigging competitions and moving large amounts of money.

Key points discussed:

* New betting law:
Brazil now has clear regulations for the sector, inspired by best practices from countries like the United Kingdom and Australia, aiming to enhance security, oversight, and transparency;

* Combating match-fixing: Match-fixing remains one of the biggest threats to the credibility of sports. The law requires betting operators to report signs of manipulation within five days, establishing an official investigative channel with the SPA, Public Prosecutor’s Office, and Federal Police;

* Responsibility of betting operators: With the new regulation, operators play an active role in identifying fraud, reporting to authorities, and implementing preventive measures;

* Prevention and education: Fred Justo advocated for more investment in athlete education so they understand the real risks of engaging with match-fixers. He emphasized that protecting vulnerable players is also protecting the market itself;

* Advertising and sponsorship: The discussion also addressed limits on betting advertising, especially in youth competitions, and warned about the potential for conflicts in partnerships between clubs and betting companies that go beyond traditional sponsorships.

“Regulation won’t eliminate manipulation, but it will greatly help define what actions to take when it occurs,” Fred Justo emphasized.

With the “Jogo Responsa” initiative, Rei do Pitaco reaffirms its commitment to protecting bettors, ensuring sports integrity, and supporting players by promoting an open space for transparent and qualified dialogue about the future of the sector.
